THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE RISK MANAGER

We also spoke in depth to ten senior risk experts across Europe, exploring how professionalism, innovation and diversity – themes central to this year’s event – are driving change and increasing expectations across the profession. What is abundantly clear from the results is that the practice of corporate risk management has undergone considerable change in recent years. Risk managers have taken on a greater role in governance and compliance following the financial scandals of the early 2000s and the global financial crisis. Rapid technology advances, meanwhile, have magnified the threats on risk managers’ horizons – and multiplied the opportunities for perfecting their skills. Boards and c-suites are aware as never before of the hazards of poor governance and digital disasters, such as a high-profile data breach, and their appreciation of the risk management function has grown.
