The Social Marketer’s Guide to Infographics

Modern humans have been around for approximately 200,000 years and for almost all of that time (97% to be precise), we’ve survived by reading just the visual imagery around us. We didn’t start using alphabets until about 5,500 years ago. Text is a great help but many messages are still more easily seen than read by our evolving brains. For 21st century social media marketers this means that the ability to communicate visually is essential for reaching the widest possible audience. Infographics, which combine charts, diagrams, pictures and stylized text into a visually pleasing package have become a great fit for social media marketing as a hybrid of images and text. They get noticed, invite engagement, are highly flexible and are popular when shared on social networks. They also tend to function as ‘link bait’ for industry blogs which can (still) boost search rankings. Think of an infographic as a specialized form of blog post. Some messages will require a lot of text, but why not diversify and try stating more of your messages visually as infographics? Remember, the brains of your audience are wired and eager to process imagery.
