Tweets, Tweeps and Twitches
All Twitter users are identified by the “@” sign in front of their user name (such as @Voxuspr). While Twitter started out as a way for friends to connect and share their lives, it has quickly evolved into a powerful business tool that communicates new product news, investor updates, giveaways, trade show appearances and creates buzz around a brand. It’s also becoming apparent that Twitter is where breaking news will appear first: it was the first to broadcast news of a recent airliner crash, and the first to have images of it. In fact, during a recent presidential speech, members of Congress could be seen tweeting away to their constituents.
In November 2008, analyst Jeremiah Owyang (@jowyang) of Forrester Research estimated that Twitter had as many as six million users. In February 2009, Internet search analytics site Compete.com ranked the top social networks -- and Twitter came in third, with over 54 million monthly visits. That’s more than LinkedIn, traditionally known as a business networking site, more than Classmates.com (connecting alumni) and more visitors than Friendster, one of the first social networking sites.
