Achieving Quality
This workbook addresses the issues of Achieving Quality. Should you wish to extend your study to other Super Series workbooks covering related or different subject areas, you will find a comprehensive list at the back of this book.
The book by Peters and Austin was first published in 1985. There’s been a growing interest in quality management since that time, but if the criticism implied in the second sentence was valid then, the situation won’t have changed very much – there hasn’t been time. If you are lucky, you may have noticed a maturing commitment to quality among senior management in your organization. At any rate, you will perhaps be aware of the increased importance given generally to the management of quality.
The last two sessions of this workbook are about techniques: statistics, sampling and quality control. However, as Peters and Austin say, techniques are not at the heart of quality. It is important, therefore, to begin by discussing some more fundamental issues, before we get on to numbers and statistics.
We start by defining what we mean by quality. Then we discuss the management aspects, and the steps involved in achieving high quality.
We’ll round off the session by briefly investigating the subject of Total Quality Management, and achieving quality at team level.
