Science and the National Parks

The National Park Service (NPS) protects and preserves some of the finest examples of the nation's natural and cultural heritage. Rugged mountains, desert solitude, dynamic beaches, historic battlefields, and rare archaeological sites—in all, the system includes nearly 80 million acres in 361 units. It is a system emulated around the world, a distinctive contribution of the people of the United States to world conservation. The 1916 Organic Act, still in effect today, provides the basic statutory authority for the NPS, declaring its mission to be
to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. (16 U.S.C.A. Sec. 1)
