Water plays an insurmountably important role in our lives. It is not only central to our food and drink but also integral to the societies we build and live in. History shows that all great civilizations are invariably underpinned by the great rivers or seas. With more than 62,262,000 people currently living in the United Kingdom (UK), it is currently the 5th most populated country in Europe and the 22nd in the world (Eurostat estimate, 2011). The UN (Economic and Social Affairs Department-ESA) predicts that Britain‘s population will swell from the current 62 million to either 82 million (upper limit of estimate) or 64 million (lower limit of estimate), depending on the assumptions made regarding fertility (and other parameters) and this will almost certainly have an effect on the amount of water required to support such large increases
