How important is population? To put it at its mildest, it seems no subject for soul- searching in today’s world. Mankind is as much a standard of existence as the land, sea and air.
That view was abundantly clear during the abysmal political debates that preceded the UK parliamentary elections this spring. Inward migration levels were the hot topic undoubtedly. Alas, the ignorance of party leaders was quite untested by questioning that lacked all sophistication.
As is normal, debate was economics-related. In essence, the working, tax-paying, law- abiding man is an unquestionable asset. Thus, the problem is barely one of numbers at all but of organising society, be it multicultural or not, to maximise the contribution of the willing and peaceful worker. Solve this one and Britain’s future is assured.
Or is it? Environment was on nobody’s lips. Britain and the world stands on the threshold of a climate-changed, oil- and resource-depleted future. Of more immediate concern, we see overcrowded cities, traffi c jams, stressed power and water supplies, sky-high house prices and a damaged environment.
