Human Security and Mutual Vulnerability
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Canada’s
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) are delighted to
be associated with this path-breaking new book.
Harvesting Feminist Knowledge for Public Policy emerged from a seed
planted at a meeting in Casablanca, Morocco, where a group of influential
feminist thinkers, scholars, and economists adopted the name
“Casablanca Dreamers.” They envisioned a world that enhances and
builds the capacities and creativities of all people through new roads to
progress and prosperity. Fourteen essays by these “Dreamers” have now
been brought together in this volume by Devaki Jain, an internationally
respected Indian feminist and founding member of Development Alternatives
with Women for a New Era (DAWN), and Diane Elson, Professor of
Sociology at the University of Essex, UK, who was named one of 50 key
thinkers on development in 2006.
The editors quote a former governor of the Reserve Bank of India as
stating:
