OUTSOURCING ECONOMICS

This book is the result of research and conversation over a number of years, and it gives us great pleasure to have a chance to thank the many people who have generously provided criticism, support, and inspiration to us over that time. There is no way to cite everyone who helped as we tested our ideas at university seminars, academic conferences, before the U.S. International Trade Commission, the AFL-CIO, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, panels at the ILO, OECD, World Bank, and WTO, and in postings on deliberatelyconsidered.com. The great variety of venues where we have put out our ideas has led to a useful diversity of responses in return.
An invaluable source of intellectual input for the book came from the research group based at the University of Manchester called “Capturing the Gains from Globalization: Economic and Social Upgrading in Global Value Chains,” where Will serves on the Research Coordinating Committee. We have benefited from the diverse, interdisciplinary, and deep knowledge from colleagues in that group, including Stephanie Barrientos, Barbara Evers, Gary Gereffi, Shayne Godfrey, Fritz Mayer, Dev Nathan, John Pickles, and Anne Posthuma.
