THE FUTURE X NETWORK A BELL LABS PERSPECTIVE

Bell Labs research has never written a book. Bell Labs researchers have, of course, written or edited thousands of books, and tens of books have been written about Bell Labs and its unique history of innovation. But, in the 90 years that Bell Labs has been in existence, Bell Labs research as an organization has never written a book. So, why start now? Well, in short, it seemed that the time was right. We are at the nexus of a human technological revolution that will be different than any prior era, as it will simultaneously be both global and local, with innovation occurring everywhere. Therefore, almost by definition, this technological revolution will be less coherent in execution, as myriad different perspectives collide and compete. The collision of ideas often distills the optimum solution to a problem, which is the classic modus operandi of Bell Labs and is the basis of the phenomenal breakthroughs that have come from the Labs over its history. The coming global-local collision of ideas will make this technological revolution one of the most fruitful and far-reaching in human history.
Inside Bell Labs we have been exploring the limits of current technologies, architectures and solutions with a view to 2020 and beyond. From our explorations, we have created a vision for the future of networking for the new digital era, including its associated systems, applications and services. Rather than keep this vision internal to the Labs, we are sharing it with the industry at large, with the goal of fostering an informed discussion of the future network, a common understanding of its potential to transform human existence and the essential investments needed to bring it about.
