Anxiety and Avoidance,
Flexibility is the hallmark of mental and emotional health. The goal of this book is to enhance the flexibility of your thinking, attending, and acting. You’ll learn to shift more easily out of your anxiety and avoidance and into more-reasonable and less-anxiety-evoking thoughts and
attitudes so that you can see things as they really are. You’ll also learn to shift your attention by unhooking from your anxious thoughts and anxious body, and from the objects and events in your environment that frighten you, through focusing on what you’re doing here and now. You’ll discover the value of stepping toward, rather than away from, discomfort, and through this process, you’ll grow more confident that you can handle your anxious response and the objects and situations linked to it. Last, you’ll learn to stop the senseless and frustrating anxious actions, such as checking or seeking reassurance, that you know make little sense but that seem impossible to stop doing.
As your thinking, attending, and acting become more flexible, your emotional system will become more flexible too. You’ll find that it’s easier to calm yourself: to shift your anxious response down when it makes sense to do this, and to shift your emotional system into high gear when that makes sense. Emotional flexibility, then, is the key to recovery from your anxiety disorder.
This book is for anyone who struggles with anxiety and for psychotherapists who are seeking a single, effective approach to help clients recover from such problems, regardless of the severity of the anxiety or, if there’s a diagnosis, the specific type of anxiety disorder. The book rests on the assump- tion that all anxiety disorders share common factors that maintain anxiety and avoidance and that any effective treatment must target those common factors by teaching common skills. Even though this book often addresses the reader as having an anxiety disorder, if you don’t have an anxiety dis- order but struggle with periods of intense anxiety, the strategies in this book can help you too.
