Monitoring and Managing Distributed Retail Locations

According to Gartner Research, "The retail sector has a long-standing reputation for conservative technology adoption… However, much is changing in the retail sector, which is increasingly concerned with the capabilities of the 'big-box' retailers led by Wal-Mart. Retailers of all sizes are now realizing that operational efficiency is not enough to compete. Effective IT solutions, or the lack of them, can now be a survival issue in the fast-paced, but low-margin retail sector."F1F
Propelled by powerful competitive forces and the decreasing cost of high-speed broadband connectivity, retail operations are moving quickly to beef up in-store technology. Retailers are upgrading POS systems and improving Web-based customer service kiosks. They are deploying CRM applications, IP-based video surveillance, and Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs) to reduce costs, increase revenue, enhance the shopping experience, and gather vital business information. Merchandise selection is clearly still important, yet increasingly, retailers are using information about all facets of in-store operations to sharpen their competitive edge.
