Core Animation for Mac OS X and the iPhone
Animation has been an important part of the Mac OS X user interface since the beginning. You’ve probably seen the Genie effect so many times that you hardly notice it anymore. But I still remember the first time I saw a QuickTime movie being minimized via Genie. The movie kept playing as the window shrank and distorted onto the Dock. That knocked my socks off. Or how about the first time you saw the Magnification effect on the Dock? It’s not just eye candy, but it is beautiful! Even back before there was Mac OS X, there was NeXTstep with its animating Recycle Bin; as the disposed files were deleted, the recycle symbol would animate. That was not nearly as beautiful as what we get today from Mac OS X, but for its time, it was amazing. I would create files just so I could delete them! As the hardware we run on becomes more and more capable, these types of effects become even more natural to add to our applications.
