Production and productivity in the European Union

In a somewhat simplified analysis of the economy, the economic system can be broken down into two main parts: on one side the enterprise 'operators', producing goods and services, providing employment and distributing income in the form of wages; on the other the household ”operators”, receiving income and consuming goods and services. The other operators in the economic system are the general government and the rest of the world. The interrelations between the various opera- tors are extremely complex, and all these data are summarised in the national accounting system. Eurostat has an enormous quantity of statistical data and therefore of information on the whole economic system; however, the very wealth of data makes it difficult to work out indicators for the whole picture. The purpose of this publication is to fully illustrate both what data are available from the National Accounts, and to supply a summary of the information that can be derived from them, via the text and the information contained in the graphs and tables.
