Legal Aspects of International Trade

WITH the WTO fourth ministerial conference just round
the corner, preparations in view of launching the next round of trade
negotiations are in full swing. While memories of Seattle linger on,
it is the agenda of a possible next round of negotiations which continues
to focus the attention of trade delegates. The publication of
the proceedings of the recent seminar on international trade sponsored
jointly by the World Bank Legal Department (LEG) and the
World Bank Institute (WBI) could not have come at a more opportune
time.
The seminar took place on October 24 – 25, 2000. It was the
first ever seminar on international trade sponsored by LEG. Its purpose
was to take stock of the state of existing multilateral trade rules
and review the outlook for the next round of negotiations, with
particular emphasis on their implications from a legal perspective
for developing countries. The seminar also sought to discuss the
role, if any, that the Bank could, or should usefully play in the process
